We have been having an exciting day here in kindergarten to celebrate the 100th day of school! We are 100 days smarter and 100 days bigger! We started our morning by getting 100 "dollars", and had a great discussion of what we would buy with our money. We had lots of great ideas, and some were even about helping other people! Of course, we had to count to 100 by ones and tens, and we did a wonderful job with it. To let the whole school know we were celebrating, we made 100th day hats to show that we are 100 days brighter. The most exciting part of our day was getting to share our 100th day projects. These were so fun and creative! Thank you to all of our families for helping us with this assignment. We really enjoyed showing them off to our classmates. Check out our projects below! In the afternoon we traveled around to the other classrooms for kindergarten-wide 100th day centers! In each class we completed an activity and project about the 100th day of school. It was a great day!

Hello families! Last week we finished reading our last predecodable book, which was sent home on Friday. These predecodable books focus on helping us learn to read our sight words. All of our sight words have been introduced, and we will spend the rest of this week and next reviewing all of the words we have been learning. Today we read our first decodable book in our reading series! These books are a little different in that there are no picture words to help us read. Instead, we will be using our decoding and blending skills to sound out new words in our book. Today we read Sam Sat, which will go home on Friday for practice. We also started chapter 5 in math today. In this chapter we will be learning to add numbers together. We talked about the plus sign and equal sign, and how to use pictures to help us add numbers. In home folders you'll find some vocabulary flash cards that will help us with this chapter. I have received a lot of wonderful 100th day projects so far. Don't forget to send these projects in by Friday. We will be presenting our projects to our classmates as part of our 100th day of school celebration!
Welcome back to another week! This week we will be focusing on the letter N. We started to make a great list of words that start with the letter N, and we will be adding to it throughout the week. This week we will be focusing on the -ig word family. To introduce this family of words, we used letter cards and our pocket chart to build and blend words together. We are finished with chapter 4 in math! We have mastered how to compose and decompose numbers, and will be ready to start addition next week! We took a math listening assessment today, and will be taking the chapter 4 test tomorrow. In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers and made a snowman art project. Don't forget that Friday is the 100th day of school! We are very excited to celebrate this milestone. Please send in completed 100th day projects in any time. We will be sharing them with the class on Friday!
We have ended a great week! We did some writing today about our friends. We used our good sentence rules to write two sentences about our friend and tell something about them. There was a lot of good teamwork when we were helping each other spell our names. In math we wrapped up chapter 4 with a review. I have been so impressed at how well we have learned to compose and decompose numbers. We will be having a test over this chapter on Tuesday next week. In the afternoon we wrapped up letter M week with some magnet experiments. We used magnets to test all kinds of different objects in the room to see if they were magnetic. We drew pictures of all the things we found that were magnetic. It was a fun way to end the day! In home folders you'll find some information about our school-wide service project. We will be raising money to help the Special Olympics by taking the Polar Plunge! Don't forget that next Friday is the 100th day of school! I can't wait to see the creative projects that you'll make!
We have been working so hard at finishing up our 50 kindergarten popcorn words! We have introduced the last six words, which are really tough, but we have been getting better and better at reading them! Make sure to be practicing at home! Yesterday we continued our discussion of characters in The Mitten, and completed an assessment where we had to put all of the animals in the correct order. Today we took a beginning sounds quiz where we had to match the picture to the correct letter it starts with. In math we learned to decompose the number 10. We have been superstars at learning to compose and decompose numbers! Soon, we will be starting addition! In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and completed a following directions activity related to our story this week. We ended the day by playing a fun "Roll a Monster" game!
Welcome back! We are back at school for letter M week. We practiced our penmanship for both capital and lowercase M. We also made an excellent word list! We are really getting good at making these lists. Can you think of more words tonight that start with the letter M? We can add them to our list tomorrow! We are doing a literature study this week on The Mitten by Jan Brett. Today we focused on learning about the characters in a story. We even learned a cute song to help us remember that the characters are the people and animals the story is about. Ask your child to sing this song to you at home! We will be doing more activities with this story this week. In math we decomposed numbers 8 and 9. We are really getting good at composing and decomposing numbers! In the afternoon we worked in new reading and math centers, as well as learned a little bit about Martin Luther King Jr. Tomorrow is another Caps for Character day at school, so bring in a dollar to wear your favorite hat. All proceeds go towards purchasing character education incentives.
Check out some samples of the snowman writing project we completed this week. We worked hard to brainstorm and chart many ideas and facts about snowmen. Then, we turned our chart into some great nonfiction writing! Look how great of a job we did remembering our good sentence rules! We have capital letters at the beginning, spaces between our words, and punctuation at the end. We also made sure that our illustrations went along with our writing.
Yesterday we did some prewriting activities about snowmen. We filled out an "are can have" chart with ideas about snowmen. We came up with so many great ideas like, snowmen are fluffy, snowmen can melt, and snowmen have buttons. Today we used our prewriting papers to write three sentences about snowmen. After our sentences were finished, we illustrated our writing. Brennen Bear came today to teach us a lesson about the meaning of widest and narrowest. We completed a following directions activity to go along with this lesson. In the afternoon we got to share our January family project. These snowmen projects were so creative! Thank you to all of our families for making them look so great!
Today we continued to work on word building with the -et family. We used letter cards to build words, and watched a Prezi presentation online where we read words in this family, as well as sentences that use these words. To help us practice at home we made a "net" of et words. Please find this activity in your child's home folder, and practice reading the word family flash cards tonight. In math we did some problem solving by taking groups and decomposing them. We also learned to read a new predecodable book today called, We Can Have a Team. We will be reading this book everyday, and will be ready to read to our families, when we take it home on Friday! In the afternoon we had a very special treat! The fantastic dogs from Purina Farms came to show us all of their tricks! We learned a lot about dogs and dog training.
Welcome back for letter L week! I hope everyone had a nice weekend! This is letter L week in kindergarten. We will be practicing handwriting and letter sounds for this letter. Today we made a great list of words that begin with the letter L. See if you and your family can brainstorm more letter L words to add to our list tomorrow. We also started work on the -et word family. We used our pocket chart and letter cards to build many words in this family. We wrote each of these words in the word family house. In math we have been composing and decomposing numbers. Today's lesson focused on taking apart groups of six and seven. Please find practice math homework in home folders today. In the afternoon we read The Snow Globe Family by Jane O'Connor. We talked about what it would be like to live inside of a snow globe, and then charted some ideas. We will be turning this into a writing and art project this week. Just a reminder that January family snowmen projects are due this week!
