Today we made a great list of words that start with the letter A! We took this list and did a draw and write activity together where we had to write the words and then draw a picture. We had fun drawing all kinds of pictures! We also practiced with our -at word family. In math we compared numbers one through ten. We counted groups and talked about which had more or less, and which groups were equal. We finished up our last round of centers, and did a great job with our first rotation! We will take a break from centers tomorrow and then start a new batch of reading and math centers. It was so fun to work in small groups with hands on activities!

Today we worked with the -at word family a little more. We learned to "ride the roller coaster" when we sound out the words with the beginning, middle and end sound. Ask your child if they can show you how to make the roller coaster with their hands. We also learned to read a new predecodable book, School, today. Be sure to practice reading this book with your child tonight and sign and return it tomorrow. We worked more in our interactive ABC notebook with matching pictures to the letter A sound. In math we did some problem solving skills and counted objects to write how many. We had an extra special treat this afternoon, where we got to see some awesome acrobats do amazing tricks! Be sure to wear tennis shoes tomorrow for PE!
Hello! I hope everyone had a nice weekend! This is letter A week in kindergarten. We were excited to be finished with our letter of the day introductions to the alphabet and are ready to do more in depth work with each letter for a week at a time. We will be exploring more sounds and phonics work with each letter, as well as starting to use them to write and spell words on our own. Today we were even introduced to our first word family, the -at family. We talked about words like bat, rat, mat, sat, and cat. We know that a word family has words that all have the same ending and they all rhyme! We built these words in our pocket chart with letter cards and then made a flip book to help practice blending sounds in this family together. Be sure to do some practice at home with it. We started using interactive alphabet notebooks today, that we will keep in our desks, and every day we will do a small phonics activity and glue it into the pages of this book. We also learned the new popcorn word I. In math we wrote the numbers nine and ten and practiced counting objects with these numbers. In the afternoon we worked in our centers, and then made torn paper apples for our letter of the week!
Today we talked about letters W and X, and tomorrow we will finish up the alphabet with Y and Z. Next week we will be ready to go more in depth with the letters as we study one letter for a whole week. Today we introduced the popcorn word see. This word helped us read our new predecodable book Lunch. We read through the book together in class and then made sure to "butter" all of our popcorn words in that story. You'll find those books in your child's home folder, so be sure to have them read it to you tonight and then sign and return it tomorrow for a special little treat. In math we talked about how to make ten in a ten frame, and counted groups of objects and matched it to the correct number. This afternoon was our Good News party, which we will have at the end of every grading period. Good News parties are incentives that all students at Whiteside word towards by making good choices. Students who participate in these parties have had no red days and have not spent time in ALC for making poor choices. There will not be a blog post tomorrow (Friday) because I will not at school, so have a wonderful weekend!
Hello families! Today we talked about the letter V. We came up with the words violet, violin, volcano, and vacuum! This morning we had a special assembly to talk about the Great American Fundraiser kick off, which will start on Monday. I know this fundraiser comes right on the heels of our Yankee Candle sale, but any help with this is appreciated! Any student who sells fifteen items will get a pizza lunch in a limo! Packets for this sale will go home on Monday. We also celebrated the first day of fall by reading and coloring a book about fall. This book uses many of the popcorn words we've learned this week, including our new one is. We practiced this new word today by using it in a sentence and completing a practice sheet. In math we took a progress check over what we've learned so far about numbers 6-9. In the afternoon we worked in our centers and made a volcano out of the letter V. We also took end of the grade period assessments over simple shapes, colors, and counting to 25!
Today was letter U day! It was a little tough to think of words that start with this letter, but we came up with umbrella, up, and under. We also introduced the popcorn word here. We have two more words we will talk about this week to get ready for our next predecodable book that will go home on Thursday. We completed our first grading period assessment where we had to write our first name, make an AB pattern and order numbers 1-5. In math we talked about the number nine and used ten frames to show that number. In the afternoon we continued to work in our centers, and did a great job at staying focused on our work! We also made an umbrella craft for our letter of the day! Don't forget that tomorrow is PE, so wear tennis shoes please!
Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weekend. Today was letter T day in kindergarten. We talked about how to write this letter and came up with words like turtle, top, tree, and telephone. We also introduced two new popcorn words: a and an. We did some practice using these words in sentences to help us with their meanings. Be sure to be practicing these words at home! We will be introducing three more words this week! We also read the poem I Brought a Worm by Kalli Dakos. This poem was about sharing time at school. Ask your child what the girl from the poem did with the worm at the end. We used this poem to complete a small writing project where students had to write what they would like to bring to school, and draw a picture of it. We talked about how important it is for the pictures in books to match what the words say. Everyone did a great job drawing a picture of what they wrote! In math we learned three new number poems to help us write the numbers 6,7, and 8. In the afternoon we started working in reading and math centers! Each day we will rotate through to a new center where we practice different skills. This round we are working on letter formation and identification, number recognition, and patterns. These centers will get harder throughout the year as we learn and master new skills! Check out some of our centers below:
Happy Friday! Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who came to eat lunch with us today! You made our grandparent lunch very special! Today we talked about some concepts of print like letters, numbers, and words. We all got a turn to help sort a concept card and put them in the right category, then we sorted numbers and letters at our desks. In math we talked about the number eight, and learned how to show eight in a ten frame card. We now know that eight can be made with a five and a three. In the afternoon we created a snake out of the letter S for our letter of the day. Next week we will finish up all of the letters, and then start over with our letter of the week study. We will also introduce the popcorn words a, an, see, here, and is, so try to get a head start over the weekend. Enjoy the weekend!
Today we talked about the letter R, and came up with words like rectangle, robot, red, and rose! We also worked more with the apple poem we learned yesterday. Today we worked together as a class to figure out how to unscramble the words and put them in the right order again. We also did this independently at our seats! Please have your child read this poem to you at home, making sure that they touch every word they say. This is great for building fluency and one to one correspondence when reading. We also started chapter 2 in math. We will be exploring numbers 6-10, adding one more, and ordinal numbers through tenth. In the afternoon we got to share our amazing reading treasure boxes! We worked on speaking skills like talking loud enough so everyone can hear, facing the audience, and eye contact. Everyone did such a great job with their boxes! Be sure to keep this box in a special place so that your child can collect all of our decodable books we will read through the year!
Today we talked about the letter Q. It was a little tricky to figure out what words start with the letter Q, but we did come up with quack and question. We learned our very first poem today! After we learned to say our poem about apples, we were given the poem with the words all mixed up. !e had to follow along and figure out how to put the words into the correct order. You'll find this poem glued to construction paper in your child's folder. Please practice this poem with them tonight, because we are going to work more with it tomorrow! In math we took our very first chapter test, and tomorrow we will be starting chapter 2, which will explore numbers 6-10. The reading treasure boxes look great! Since we have early dismissal today, we will be having our share time with these boxes tomorrow, and we will send them home at that time. If you forgot your box today, please send it in tomorrow!
