Today we talked about Halloween! We are very excited to go trick-or-treating and we talked a lot about our costumes. We did some writing and illustrating about what costumes we wanted to wear. In math we continued our review of teen numbers and also played some Halloween counting games. In the afternoon we worked in our center activities and then read the book The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. We had a lot of fun with this book! We got to act out a lot of the parts to this story and it was so fun! We did a related scarecrow activity where we had to build a scarecrow and match the correct action words to each part. Book orders went home today, so if you'd like to order books please have your orders in by November 9.

Today was picture day! We did such a great job with our smiles, and set such a nice example for other classes while we were waiting to get our pictures taken. Picture retake day will be on December 1 in case you missed your child's picture today. We worked in our interactive ABC notebooks today with the letter D. We had to figure out which pictures had the beginning sounds like duck and dog, and then glue it under the appropriate flap. In math we did a whole class review of ten frames and teen numbers. In the afternoon we worked in our center groups and then made torn paper candy corn art to help get our classroom ready for Halloween! Be sure to keep practicing your popcorn words at home! We will start introducing November's words next week!
Today we did some fun Halloween activities to help us learn beginning sounds of words. We loved pulling items out of the witch's cauldron and figuring out the beginning sound! We also did more work with our -ad word family. We talked about how to use the roller coaster to figure out the beginning, middle, and end sounds, then built each word by cutting out letters and matching them. In math we did more work with our connecting cubes and ten frames. We had to show what each number looked like on our ten frames, then did more practice with teen numbers. In the afternoon we worked in our center activities and then made jack-o-lantern puppets.
Tomorrow is PICTURE DAY! Be sure to send in your picture order form tomorrow if you would like to buy pictures. These forms must be turned in tomorrow, and students must present them to the photographer for pictures to be ordered. Everyone will get their pictures taken tomorrow, even if pictures will not be ordered. Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We are back in action with letter D week. We will be doing a lot of work with this letter like how to write it, the sound it makes and what words start with this letter. We made a great list of words that start with letter D today, but there is still room on our chart, so be sure to think of some good ones tonight and share with us tomorrow. We have also started working with a new word family, -ad. We learned to build words like dad, mad, sad, lad, and had. We did some pocket chart activities that had us matching these word family words to their pictures, and also practiced roller coaster riding each word we built. The roller coaster ride really helps us isolate the beginning, middle, and end sounds of these words. In our ABC notebook we've added a new page of the letter D that taught us some D words to add to our chart. In math we are having a review week of the 10 frames 11-20. We're using manipulatives to practice building numbers and making sure we know how to write them all. In the afternoon we started working in new centers. These centers have us counting objects in groups, matching ten frames, filling in missing alphabet letters, and matching upper and lowercase letters. We ended our day by making a Frankenstein monster to help get ready for Halloween!
We have come to the end of our short week! Today we worked a lot with our popcorn words. We studied the shape of the letters to see which letters were tall and small. We practiced writing them in the air with our invisible pencils, and then played a fun roll a popcorn word game with dice. We also worked on our handwriting skills for the letters A, B, and C to make sure we are good and ready to move onto letter D next week. In math we did a progress check on numbers past ten, and next week we will be doing a review of these numbers so we can easily recognize them in ten frames and in writing. We have also been working at following directions, so we did a scarecrow following directions activity where we had to draw and color. Don't forget that there is no school tomorrow or Friday. We will be back on Monday!
We are almost finished with our short week! Today we worked on using the popcorn words we've learned so far to help make and read sentences. We then practiced reading these sentences and helped unscramble them so they make sense. In math we worked on using ten frames to make the numbers 16 and 17. This was little more tricky than the number 15, so we worked a little extra at the board together exploring how to make these numbers. In the afternoon we moved our desks to new tables! We now have new table friends and new seats. We also made torn paper jack-o-lanterns to help decorate our room for Halloween. This project will be displayed in our room as a pumpkin patch. Pictures of this will be up tomorrow!
Hello families! I hope you had a nice weekend. We are back for a short week! Since this week is only three days, we will not be focusing on a letter of the week, but instead have a review of the letters we've covered so far. Next week we will get back to letter of the week with D. We spent some time working on popcorn words today. So far we've introduced 12 words, and will add two more new ones tomorrow! It is important to keep up with these words, because we will be learning many through the year. We also did a number dictation assessment where we had to write the numbers we heard. In math we learned to make 15 in a ten frame, and are really getting good at figuring out numbers past ten when we are using these ten frames. In the afternoon we had a special concert from the Glee Club. The Glee Club performed some great Halloween songs for us today. We really enjoyed the music and dancing!
Today was a very exciting day for kindergarten! First thing we had a practice fire drill to make sure we know what to do if there is ever a fire at school. We all did a great job at staying quiet and walking through the hallway to the outside. After our drill we got to talk to the firemen! They taught us what to do if smoke detectors go off at our house and how to stay safe in case of a real fire. The best part was when we got to go outside to sit in the firetruck! They showed us all kinds of tools they kept on the truck and then let each one of us sit inside to see what it's like to be a firefighter. Thank you East Side Fire Department for such a fun day! They were even nice enough to give us our own fire hats! In the afternoon we played a game on the Promethean board where we had to sort pictures into their beginning sounds. We also made a pretty good list of words for the letter C. We will add more words to our list tomorrow so try and think of some good ones tonight. At the end of the day we each made an illustration of our favorite fall leaves falling from the trees. Tomorrow is the last day for the book fair, so if you'd like your child to be able to shop, please send money tomorrow.
Today we worked more on our fall poem. We practiced reading it a few times, then we had to unscramble it and put it in the right order using clues and beginning letter sounds. Practicing reading these poems at home helps build fluency and helps with rhyming skills. We added another page in our ABC interactive notebooks about the letter C. We thought of some great words that start with C including cake, car, candle, and cat. In math we started chapter 3 today, where we will be exploring numbers to twenty. In our first lesson we talked about how we can use two ten frames to make numbers more than 10, and learned how to show 11 and 12 in ten frames. In the afternoon we finished up the last of our centers, and we will be exploring new centers next week. We also practiced reading a book about fall leaves. Practice reading this book at home with your child, and see if they can pick out the popcorn word the and some color words. We have also been working on telling a story by using pictures if we don't know the words, so even if your child can't read the words, see if they can tell you the story by looking at the pictures. This is a great first step in reading!
If you did not send book fair money with your child today, you will be able to send it tomorrow and Friday. I will let the students go up to shop in the morning. Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the nice weather and extra long weekend! We are back at school for letter C week. We had a busy day today! We learned a poem about fall leaves, and did an activity where we put the words in the correct order together. You'll find this poem in your child's home folder, so be sure and practice reading it tonight. Remember to have your child touch every word as they read with their finger so they get practice with one to one correspondence. We all visited Nurse Julie today to get our hearing tested, and sometime soon we will go back for her to check our vision. In the afternoon we worked in our center groups, and then made Christopher Columbus's ship out of construction paper.
Tomorrow we will visit the book fair for our library day. No books will be checked out tomorrow, so we will shop the book fair instead. If you would like your child to purchase books or other items, please send money in an envelope to school with your child tomorrow. Please put your child's name on his/her envelope of money! More money can be sent through the week, and students will be able to shop first thing in the morning. Tomorrow is the only day we will visit the book fair as a class. |
