We only have one more day to go before we start our winter break! We had such an exciting day today. It was our Polar Express pajama party, and we had so much fun. We started our day by playing some games on our Promethean board that helped us with matching beginning sounds and letters. It was a fun way to reinforce our skills. For our Polar Express party we set up our room like a movie theater and watched the show on the big screen with our own Polar Express tickets! We even got to change into our slippers to go along with our pajamas. We had hot chocolate with marshmallows and cookies for a special movie treat. It was a fun day. During specials time, Mrs. Brush took our class to the staff lounge where we serenaded the teachers' holiday potluck with Jingle Bells. Everyone enjoyed our singing!

Today we did some assessments on rhyming words. We have been working on rhyming words for weeks and have had so much fun with them! We especially liked making up silly words that rhyme. We also did more with number identification with numbers 11-20 just as an extra review, since we've gone back to working with smaller numbers as we start preaddition skills. In the afternoon we made special gingerbread cards for our families to go along with our Santa Claus hand print keepsake ornaments we made.
Tomorrow is Polar Express Day! Your child is invited to wear school appropriate pajamas to watch the Polar Express movie in our room. We will have hot chocolate with marshmallows and cookies. You can also bring in slippers to wear inside the classroom, but please wear regular shoes to school because we are still going outside for recess. Today was a fun day! We are getting into the Christmas spirit, and even had the Whiteside Middle School band come and give us a wonderful concert of Christmas songs! We were extra excited to hear our favorite songs from the movies Frozen and Polar Express. It was a wonderful treat! We have been working on ordering numbers and completed a number puzzle with numbers 1-20. In the afternoon we made a special Christmas countdown chain to help us know how many days we have until Christmas. Starting tomorrow, snip off one link every day and when you reach the golden link, it will be Christmas Day!
Welcome back! We are SO excited for the upcoming Christmas vacation, but are keeping it together to do our best in the classroom. This is letter J week, and we made a fantastic word list of things that start with the letter J. We have a couple more spots to think of more words, so if you think of one tonight, we can add it to our list tomorrow. We added another entry in our interactive ABC notebooks where we did a picture sort for words that start with J. In math we did a quick assessment on writing our numbers to 20, and then had fun with some holiday patterning. In the afternoon we finished up our last reading and math center, and then made a cut and glue Christmas tree craft. We introduced 5 new popcorn words today! They are :got, look, me, must, and my. Keep practicing these words every evening. We'll be ready to finish up the last twenty words when we get back from our break.
Here are the Christmas trees we made last week by putting strips of paper from shortest to longest. They came out great! Happy Friday! Today we worked on position words like above, below, and between. We were given some clues and we had to figure out what object in the room we were talking about using these concepts. We also helped add the pictures to a gingerbread girl book that helped reinforce these concepts. For a language lesson today we talked about in front of and behind. We read a story about Brennen Bear and what he likes to play at recess time. Ask your child if he/she can remember what games Brennen played while he was outside with his friends (hide and seek, follow the leader, swings). Also see if they can remember why Brennen's teacher picked him to be the line leader (he was a hard worker that day). These comprehension questions are great for helping your child think about the story. In the afternoon we shared our awesome gingerbread family projects! We really had a fun time seeing how creative everyone was with these! Some of them look good enough to eat. There is still time to send in your gingerbread project if you haven't done so already. We'd love to add it to our bulletin board. Have a great weekend!
Today we did some beginning sound assessments where we had to match pictures to the correct letter that matched the beginning sound. We also did a fantastic job rereading our predecodable book from yesterday! Thank you for practicing at home! In math we continued to find ways to make numbers, and this time composed numbers to 8 and 9. We are getting so good at this! We can do it completely independently now! In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and then made a Christmas tree our of different lengths of paper. We even got to use glitter! Once they are dry, we'll use them to decorate our classroom for our holiday party next week. Tomorrow we will be having a Good News party to reward good behavior and good choices. So far EVERYONE in our class is invited, and we are so excited. With the holidays coming up, we are extra excited about everything and sometimes have trouble controlling our impulses, so be sure to remind your child to take some deep breaths and continue making good choices!
Today we put our three new popcorn words (who, has, and do) to good use by learning to read a new predecodable book today. Please look for it in your child's home folder so you can practice reading it tonight! We completed a letter I search inside our interactive ABC notebooks and also played a spinner game with capital and lowercase letters. In math we did a progress check on what we've learned so far about composing and decomposing numbers, and we all did a great job! We've really got the hang of how to make and take apart numbers. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and then went to the reading lab for our winter AIMSweb testing. You'll get the results of this round of testing as soon as all results have been totaled.
Today we worked more with rhyming words. We completed another rhyme away story, and this time we had to listen to clues to know what parts of a person to erase. We did a great job at figuring out the rhyming clues! We also completed a beginning sounds picture sort with the letter I in our interactive ABC notebooks. In math we did a problem solving page about how to decompose numbers. We had an extra special afternoon in our classroom! We were so lucky to have Belleville East High School students from BASIC (Belleville Achieves Strength in Character) come to teach us a character education lesson. They read the book Have You Filled Your Bucket Today? and then helped us decorate a Christmas stocking and paper ornament. They were even nice enough to bring us a cookie for a snack, and even Santa came for a little visit! It was a lot of fun!
Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! We are just two weeks away from our winter break, and we are very excited about all of the fun things coming up! This week we will be focusing on the letter I. We added a new section to our interactive notebooks, and came up with some words that start with the letter I, like icing, igloo, ice, and island. We also did a letter dictation assessment, where we had to write down the letter that we heard. Please look for this assessment in your child's folder, so you can see how your child did on this task. Don't forget to keep practicing those letter flashcards! In math we decomposed numbers 6 and 7. We are really starting to get the hang of doing this! In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and then made a Rudolph craft by tracing our hands and feet!
Happy Friday! Today we played roll a word with our popcorn words to help us practice. Be sure to be practicing these popcorn words daily at home. Our list of words to know is getting longer and longer, so it's important to stay on top of it! We also did a letter H phonics assessment where we had to sort some pictures to find the ones that start with the /h/ sound. We also had a Brennen Bear language lesson today where we learned about the concepts of over and under. Ask your child what they should to with their hands to show both over and under. We learned that in our lesson today! We read a story that used these words and then had to answer comprehension questions and complete a following directions activity. It required a lot of good listening! In the afternoon we worked on our centers, and then went to a fantastic Christmas concert put on by the Glee Club. They did such a great job singing Christmas songs and helped get us in the holiday spirit!
