Today we kept working with objects to help us solve subtraction problems. We also worked on reading a new decodable book, Sam and Matt. We are getting so much better at using sounds and pictures to help us read words we don't know. We also introduced the -it words family today. We built words like kit, sit, bit, and fit. To help us use what we've learned about this word family, we worked in groups to match pictures and build words to match. We showed great teamwork today during this activity! In the afternoon we went to the computer lab for some math game time with Planet Turtle. We also worked in our reading and math centers. Remember that tomorrow is the last day to donate a dollar for our Polar Plunge service project, which benefits the Special Olympics.

We learned about rainbows today for the letter R! We learned that rainbows are made when the light that shines through water gets bent. We made a picture of our friend Roy G. Biv, who helped us learn the order of the colors in the rainbow. Check him out!
We are really getting the hang of our small popcorn word lists, and are doing a great job practicing! Remember our quiz will be THURSDAY this week, since we will not have school on Friday! Today we worked on isolating ending sounds of words. We also used some voting tools to decide if simple words like map, set, vet, and cat were spelled correctly. We were not tricked at all, and picked out all of the words that were spelled incorrectly! In math we started telling subtraction stories, and used objects and drawings to solve simple subtraction stories. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, then learned about rainbows. We created a special rainbow project to help us remember the order of the colors. Stay tuned for some pictures of our cute project! Remember that Six Flags reading logs are due tomorrow!
Welcome back for another week of school! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. This is letter R week in kindergarten. We practiced our handwriting and made a great list of words that start with R. We took some of those words and worked through how to use sounds to help us spell them, then drew pictures to match. In math we have started subtraction! We talked about the minus sign and what it means to take away objects from a group. Using objects and pictures, we build some number sentences, practiced some flash cards, and made a flip book to help us practice. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math center groups, and read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Phister. We ended the day with a rainbow fish craft. Don't forget that Six Flags Read to Succeed reading hours are due Wednesday! A new family homework project has also gone home today, so look for it in home folders!
I hope everyone enjoyed the surprise day off yesterday! Today we came back ready to finish our week. All of our hard work on popcorn word practice has paid off, and we finished our second popcorn word test. We also continued work on CVC words by matching words to pictures. In math we took our chapter 5 test over addition, and next week we will begin subtraction. After our math test, we talked more about President's Day, specifically about Abraham Lincoln. We learned to draw a portrait of him, and they turned out great! Check them out below. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers and ended the day by making an Abraham Lincoln puppet.
Today we worked on spelling CVC words like log, mud, and bed. We used the sound roller coaster to sound out these words and figure out the beginning, middle, and ending letter. Ask your child to roller coaster ride words like log, dog, hat, pet, pig, and tip. In math we reviewed for our chapter 5 test, which will be on Friday. We reviewed the new addition signs that we have learned, as well as solving number sentences using pictures. Next week, we will introduce subtraction! In the afternoon we went to the computer lab to play some Planet Turtle math games. We also worked on new reading and math centers where we are practicing our beginning blends, ending sounds, patterns, and nonsense words. Remember that our popcorn list 2 quiz will be on Friday! Please make sure you work on studying those words every night!
Welcome back for a short week! This is letter Q week, and today we made a word list of everything we could think of that starts with the letter Q. That was a tricky task! Can you help us add more words tomorrow? Brainstorm letter Q words with your family tonight, and we'll add to our list tomorrow. We did some assessments today on letter sounds and writing good sentences. We had to listen to a sound and write the correct letter that makes that sound. We also used the good sentence rules that we've learned to correct some sentences that were missing capital letter and punctuation. In math we did a fluency check for number sentences. In the afternoon we had our third Good News Party! We had such a great time, and we were visited by a very special guest, the Tye Dyed Iguana! We send a big "thank you" to the Tye Dyed Iguana in Fairview Heights for coming out to see us today. We got to pet lizards, skinks, and snakes! It was so cool to touch all of the animals, and learn about them. In folders tonight you'll find popcorn word list 2. Please take the time to study every evening this week, and we will have a test over these words on Friday!
Hello again! We have had a busy past few days! We have been working on some handwriting and name assessments for the fourth grading period. It is amazing to see how much our letter formation and handwriting skills have improved since the beginning of school! All of our hard work in kindergarten has paid off. We have been adding numbers up to 10 using objects. We know the plus and equal signs, and can use them to read and create number sentences. For letter P week we have been learning about penguins. We have made a fact chart that is almost full of penguin facts we have learned over the past couple of days. Yesterday, we took those facts and created a can/need/have chart as a nonfiction pre-writing project. Today we took our pre-writing and turned it into a four sentence paragraph! We even had a mini art lesson on how to draw a penguin. We also made a great symmetry penguin with paint! Check out our work below! Remember that tomorrow we will be sharing our Valentine's Day boxes and valentines with the class. Please be sure to send in completed valentines and boxes tomorrow. We will be mailmen/women and deliver all of our valentines to our classmates!
REMINDER: List 1 popcorn word test tomorrow! Welcome back for another week of kindergarten! This is letter P week, and we have been working on identifying words and pictures that start with the /p/ sound. We also made a very impressive word list of words that begin with the letter P. We thought of so many words we ran out of room on our chart! We used the word list today to practice spelling and drawing things that start with the letter p. In math we were introduced to the equal sign when adding numbers. We now have all of the tools to create and solve addition number sentences. In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers and went on a Big Book hunt for popcorn words. Valentine's day boxes can be sent in any time this week. We will be sharing our projects on Friday, and then will deliver all of our valentines later on to take home.
Picture Day is Wednesday!!! Today we worked on spelling CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. We took simple words like fig, cat, rib, and zap and used our sounds to figure out how to spell each word. You can practice this important skill at home by giving your child simple, three letter words and have them sound them out and write them. Our speech therapist came today and taught us a lesson about the words above and below. We played a fun game of Brennen Says (like Simon Says), and then completed a following directions activity. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers where we practiced graphing, addition, and popcorn words. We also practiced some number sequencing with numbers 11-20.
