Thank you for all of the donations for the fire fighter service project. We were just $29 short of reaching our goal of $800. Not too bad!
I hope everyone enjoyed the fantastic weather this weekend! This is letter R week in kindergarten, and today we made an excellent word list. This week we are working on the next ten popcorn words on our list, so be sure to look for list 2 in your child's folder today. We will be working hard on the words at school, but please be sure to practice them at home too! We'll have a test over this list on Friday. We added a picture sort page to our interactive letter notebooks for the letter R and then worked on subtraction sentences where we introduced the equal sign. In the afternoon we started a penguin symmetry painting, which we'll finish up tomorrow.

I hope everyone enjoyed playing in the snow yesterday! We got back to work today with syllable counting. We used the story of the three little pigs as a fun way to clap out syllables for words. We practiced with friends' names first, and figured out how many syllables their names had, then did a fun picture sort on the pocket chart with words from the story. We also introduced our fourth decodable book, Sam and Matt. Please read this book with your child over the weekend for good practice. As they read, be sure to have them point to each word so they are making the connection to the word they're saying. In math we introduced the minus sign and used pictures to help us solve subtraction number sentences. In the afternoon we went to the computer lab for some reading and math game practice. We took our first popcorn word quiz today. We will get a new list of words on Monday! Have a nice long weekend.
Today we put our vowel charts to good use again with spelling CVC words. It was so great to hear everyone making their sounds and using the sound roller coaster to spell our words. Connecting sounds with letters is a key part of reading and writing, and we're getting better every day! We also did more sentence writing practice and used our good sentence rubric to grade our writing. This rubric has become handy to help us remember things like word spacing and punctuation. In math we did a progress check on subtraction and everyone did a great job! We even got some time to play our favorite addition game, Reach for the Stars. In the afternoon we went to the computer lab to play our Planet Turtle games. Please remember to study the first list of popcorn words! We'll be having a test over them on Thursday! Please turn in any Six Flags reading logs by Thursday too.
I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! Welcome back for another week! We will not be focusing on a letter of the week this week, but instead are highly focused on our sight words. We'll pick up with letter R next week. Since we have already introduced all of the kindergarten sight words, we will be breaking them down into smaller lists of 10 words to practice at a time. This week we start off with list number 1, which you'll find in your child's folder. It is important to practice these words every evening because at the end of the week (Thursday) we will be having a test over these 10 words. These words can also be found on our home page HERE. We will be working with these words every day, so please help continue the learning at home with some quick practice. We will have a new list of words every week until we finish all 50 words. We also read a new book today called Sit, Lil. Please practice reading this book at home, then sign and return tomorrow. In math we started using objects and stories to help us subtract. In the afternoon we did some problem solving and directions activities, then played a fun game claled Slap the Word. We used fly swatters to slap popcorn words that were written on our Promethean board. We had to find the right word before our partner, then slap it with the fly swatter! It was really fun, and we can't wait to play again tomorrow.
Today we did some sentence writing practice. We took out our good sentence writing rubric and did a quick review of capital letters, word spacing, and punctuation. We also read our next decodable book called, Hat. Please look for this book in your child's folder this evening and listen to them read it to you for sight word and fluency practice. In math we told subtraction stories today and drew pictures to help us figure out the story problem. In the afternoon we finished up with our last center, and then talked more about President's Day and Abraham Lincoln. The Abe Lincoln puppet we made was fun too!
We are still taking any donations for our art basket for the Cosmic BINGO silent auction. Don't forget we are also in the middle of our service project that benefits the East Side Fire Department. Bring in a dollar for a chance to win a prize. All money donated will go towards helping the fire department buy a new rescue dummy. Today was a busy day! We started out with some vowel letter and sound review, then used our handy vowel charts to help figure out the middle sound in some CVC words. We also played a fun Promethean game where we had to figure out the middle sounds of words. The "roller coaster" we ride to sound out simple CVC words came in handy too. We figured out that the middle sound is the sound we make at the top of our roller coaster. Yesterday we did such a great job with being superstar listeners and speakers, that we did more work with that today. We did another friend interview, but this time we asked even more questions like age, favorite food, weather, pet, and part of school. We all got up in front of the class and told each other about the information we learned from interviewing our friend. Everyone did such a nice job! We were all superstar listeners and speakers today. In math we have started subtraction! We told some subtraction stories to illustrate what it means to take away, and I think that really helped us! In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers, then talked about Presidents Day, specifically what the job of the President is. We also drew some EXCELLENT portraits of Abraham Lincoln. We'll be learning more about him tomorrow!
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a fantastic three day weekend. On Friday we had such a wonderful Valentine's Day party put on by our awesome room parents! We decorated sugar cookies with icing and fun sprinkles and made a great hand print keepsake craft. Opening all of our valentines was also so much fun! This week we are focusing on being a superstar listener and speaker. We are learning to use anchor charts to help keep our good listening skills in check while others are speaking, and it has been so helpful! We practiced some good listening and speaking skills by interviewing a friend. We practiced getting into partners and then asked each other questions to find out our favorite colors and favorite food. It was such a fun activity, and we learned more about our classmates. To put our good speaking skills to use, we came up to the front of the class and shared what we learned about our friend. Tomorrow we will interview our friends again, but this time with more questions! In the afternoon we went to the computer lab to play some Planet Turtle games, and we are really getting good at logging into our accounts!
We have been thinking of words that start with the letter P all week and today we made an incredible word list! Everyone had their hand up with good ideas of things to put on the list, and we filled our chart up quickly! We have really been working hard on using sounds and blending to spell words, and we continued today with some work spelling our CVC words and also reading nonsense words to build our fluency. The vowel charts on our desks are really helping us get those tricky middle vowel sounds. In our interactive notebook we added a page where we had to read sentences and then drew pictures to match. We also did a bit of handwriting work. We've been so focused on reading and math skills that we needed to take a break and remember our good handwriting habits! In math we finished up with our addition word problems, and learning all of the different strategies to solve addition problems has been so helpful! We know that we can use our fingers, draw a picture, use a number line, and use objects to help us solve problems. In the afternoon we had our good news party, which was a movie and popcorn with our favorite stuffed animals. We are so excited for tomorrow's Valentine's Day party, and can't wait to pass out all of our valentines to our friends.
Today was picture day! We had our spring pictures taken and also had a class photo. We tried our best to smile nicely! Today was also the day we started reading our first decodable book, Sam Sat. These books have no picture helpers under the words, so we will be using all of the decoding skills we've been working on this year to help us read. You'll find this book in your child's folder, so be sure to practice reading it with them tonight! In math we worked on more problem solving strategies to solve addition word problems. In the afternoon we worked in center groups and then made Valentine's Day cards for our families. Please remember to send in valentines and boxes for Friday's party!
Today we used our vowel chart again to help us with spelling CVC words. We are really getting good at using the roller coaster to help us figure out our beginning, middle, and end sounds. We added a picture sort for the letter P to our interactive notebooks, and it gave us some great ideas for making our letter of the week word list. In math we are doing some word problems and using problem solving skills like drawing a picture and using a number line to solve our addition problems. We really enjoyed using the number line, and found out how easy it was to help us solve addition problems! In the afternoon we went up to the computer lab and played our Planet Turtle game, and had so much fun!
Don't forget that tomorrow is picture day! Please send in your payments for portraits and/or class pictures tomorrow to give to the photographer. All students will have their picture taken, and you may order online at a later date if picture are not purchased in advanced. |
