We had a short, busy week this week! We learned a fun new poem about a Thanksgiving turkey, and completed an assessment on it where we had to put the poem back together in the correct order. Please have your child read this poem to you at home. Maybe they can recite it for family around the Thanksgiving table? We learned to read a predictable book about Thanksgiving foods, then practiced reading it with a partner. Today we made a list of all the foods we like to eat at Thanksgiving. We took that list and used it to complete a writing assignment where we wrote about what we like to eat for Thanksgiving. It was a special day for specials classes! As a reward for meeting our food drive goal, Mrs. Brush, the music teacher, put on a great Gym Jam for us! We had so much fun singing and dancing to our favorite music. We also made tie-dyed turkeys for a holiday art project using coffee filters. I hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Happy Friday! Today we learned a great new poem for Thanksgiving! We worked hard to learn the words to this poem, so that we can read it ourselves. After we learned the words we had to take the scrambled words and put them back in the right order. You can find this poem in your child's home folder today, so please have them read it to you today. We also took home the two predecodable books that we worked on this week. Please take some time to read these books with your child and practice those sight words. Return them next week before Thanksgiving break! In math we did some problem solving skills with our numbers to twenty and worked with some ten frames to show each number. In the afternoon we worked with some new reading and math centers. We are matching numbers to objects, practicing popcorn words, and identifying ending sounds with these center activities. Our day ended by practicing our handwriting with a book of Thanksgiving words. Have a great weekend!
Today we introduced a new predecodable book, We Go. This book uses our new popcorn words down, up, and go. We practiced reading this book today and "buttered" our popcorn words. We have been learning to take careful looks at the pictures in books, because the pictures give us great clues about what the words day. When you read with your child at home, do a picture walk through the book first and see if your child can tell the story by just looking at the pictures. Mrs. DeFranco and Brennen Bear came to our class today and taught us about the meanings of half and whole. We did a fun Thanksgiving activity with her and completed a following directions page. In the afternoon we made a turkey by matching numbers on feathers to the right number of objects on the body.
Today we introduced another new predecodable book called, This Is. This book uses the new popcorn words this, it, and no. All of our hard work with popcorn word practice has been paying off, because we were able to learn this book quickly! We worked in work partners today taking turns reading to each other. Please look for this book and another in Friday's home folders! Today we worked more on sentence writing. Yesterday, we talked about opinion sentences and made a chart of what kind of weather we liked. Today we took that sentence and copied it to our paper and illustrated it. After we were done with that, we got back with our partners and used a simple rubric to grade our sentences on the three sentence rules: 1. Capital letter at the beginning. 2. Spaces between words. 3. Period at the end. In the afternoon we finished up our last reading and math center, and then went home for early dismissal day! Thank you for bringing in a dollar in support of hat day today! All of the money will go towards character education programs at our school.
The class had a great time sharing their turkeys! There are so many great disguises that helped Tom Turkey escape from becoming Thanksgiving dinner! Thank you so much to all of our families for helping with this project. They were all unique and very creative! Check out all of our great family work below!
Today we did some review for our six new popcorn words we have introduced this week. We work with flashcards every morning to practice these words, and we are getting faster and faster with recognizing them! We will be working on a new writing project this week, and this time we will be learning about opinions. Today we discussed what an opinion is, and talked about how people can like different things, but it does not mean that they are wrong. As a first opinion writing assignment, we discussed what kind of weather we liked today. We could choose from snowy or sunny weather. We talked about our answers and made a class chart that tells why we like a certain kind of weather. Tomorrow, we will be taking this sentence and we will write it and draw a matching illustration. During this lesson we focused on good listening skills while our classmates were sharing ideas. Everyone did a great job and got to sign their name to our SUPERSTAR Listener chart! In math we talked about the number 20. In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers and created a count by 10s paper plate turkey. Tomorrow is hat day, so bring $1 to help support our character education program at school! Tomorrow is also 2pm dismissal!
This is letter G week in kindergarten! We started the day off by making a fantastic list of words that start with the letter G. See if you can think of more words to add to our list! We also introduced SIX new popcorn words this week! These words are: this, it, no, go, up, and down. We will be using these new popcorn words to help us with two predecodable books this week, so look for them to come home in Friday folders. We are working more on our writing this week, and today we practiced our writing skills by copying a simple sentence and illustrating it. We used our rubric and worked with our partners to check each other's work. In math we reviewed the numbers 18 and 19. For the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers, and then completed a capital/lowercase letter match turkey puzzle!
Blue Impact Aid forms were sent home in folders today. Please fill these papers out and return them as soon as possible! Today was an exciting day in kindergarten! We started our day by building more words in our -ap family, and completing a quick assessment on these words. We also played some Promethean games today where we had to pull secret pictures out of a treasure box! After we picked our secret pictures, we had to use beginning sound clues to match each picture to its correct beginning sound. Our predecodable book, A Farm, went home today in home folders. We have spent the week learning to read this book by ourselves and with a reading partner. Please be your child's reading partner this weekend and allow them to read to you to show you how all of their hard work has paid off! In the afternoon we had the most fun! It was Funny Feet Day! We brought our funny feet/socks to school today to celebrate the end of letter F week. Some of us had crazy socks, and some of us had some very funny shoes! We got to wear our funny feet while we shared our November family projects with the class. This month's project was to disguise Tom Turkey so that the farmer couldn't find him and turn him into Thanksgiving dinner! There were some very creative disguises, and we all agreed that these turkeys would not be eaten for Thanksgiving! Check out some of our funny feet and just a few of Tom Turkey's disguises below! Have a great weekend!
Thank you to all of the families that donated to our Whiteside food drive! We were able to reach our goal and even go beyond! We will be enjoying a Gym Jam the week of Thanksgiving! Thank you for helping Whiteside families! Today we practiced building words in our -ap word family using a Promethean board game. We had to look at each picture and drag the letters to spell the words. We have also been busy practicing our three new popcorn words this week: have, big and small. As a fun practice game we played "Roll a Popcorn Word", where we rolled dice and practiced writing the popcorn word that matched the number. Mrs. DeFranco came to our room today to teach us a lesson about beside and between. We had a turkey puzzle that we completed with her where we had to follow the clues to color the turkey's feathers. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and made a rain forest frog art project.
Don't forget that tomorrow is the last day to order your yearbooks and bring in food items for our food drive. |
