Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving break with their families! We are excited to be back at school, and are starting with letter H week! We have also started to work more in depth with rhyming words. We had fun with a rhyme away story today where we had to figure out what parts of a picture to erase by listening to a rhyming clue. It was a lot of fun! We also started a new section for letter H in our ABC notebooks and came up with some great words that start with this letter. In math we introduced chapter 4, which will have us composing and decomposing numbers. Please find some chapter flashcards in a small baggie and a foldable making numbers page. This foldable page is NOT homework, but it is great practice for what we will be doing in this chapter. In the afternoon we started learning about hibernation and the different animals that hibernate during the winter.

Today we learned to read a new predecodable book called, This Is. This book helps us read our three new popcorn words that we've learned this week: this, it, and no. We have shown so much improvement in how we touch every word that we read to help us stay on track. Please make sure your child is using a finger or other pointer to point to the words as he/she reads. It really helps them make the connection between written and spoken words! Make sure to practice this story tonight, and sign and return it tomorrow. We played a spinner game for the letter G in our interactive ABC notebooks, and then completed a quick counting assessment. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers and then made a letter match turkey puzzle picture.
This post will be the last until after the Thanksgiving holiday. I will be leaving for vacation and won't return until November 30. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday break! Happy Thanksgiving! Today we did some writing about what we liked to eat for Thanksgiving dinner! Pumpkin pie was a very popular choice in our classroom! We also worked in our interactive ABC notebooks, and added another letter G page, where we had to illustrate sentences and practice our handwriting. In math we talked about patterns, specifically and AAB pattern. We came up with many different ways to show this pattern, and then used turkeys and pumpkins to illustrate it on our papers. It was early dismissal today, so in the afternoon we had rest time and independent work time at our desks before we went home. Thank you for all of the hat day donations today!
Today we did a great job reading the turkey poem we learned yesterday. Even when the words were all mixed up, we were able to use beginning sounds and other clues to help us put it back in the correct order. Please practice this poem with your child. It's great practice for fluency and one to one correspondence (touching each word you read). We also worked in our ABC notebook and added a page for the letter G. We did a quick picture sort for pictures that start with the hard g sound like grape and pictures that do not make the hard g sound. Today was our chapter 3 math test! We have worked so hard on learning numbers 11-20, and everyone did a great job on our test today! After Thanksgiving we will begin chapter 4, which will have us composing and decomposing numbers to 10. This will really help us when we talk about addition and subtraction! We worked in our center groups today after lunch, and then ended our day by making a paper plate count by 10s turkey. Tomorrow is hat/cape day. Bring $1 and your child can wear a hat or cape all day in support of our character education program. Don't forget that we will be dismissed tomorrow at 2pm!
Welcome back for letter G week! Be sure to think of some words that start with the letter G, so we can make a list tomorrow. Today we learned a Thanksgiving poem. We learned to read this poem, then worked together to put the mixed up words back in order. You'll find this paper in your child's folder, so be sure to practice reading it with them tonight. We will work more with this poem tomorrow. In math we reviewed over all of the things we've learned in this chapter. We talked about ten frames with numbers 11-20, counting by tens, and counting and coloring numbers. Tomorrow we will take our chapter 3 math test. We worked with new centers today and practiced beginning sounds, handwriting, counting, and ten frames. After our centers we finally finished up our turkey projects! We have been working on these for a whole week, and all of our hard work has paid off. They look so great, and really help get our room ready for Thanksgiving! Check them out below!
I hope everyone enjoyed the Veteran's Day holiday yesterday! We are back at school, and had a busy day! We are almost finished with our turkey writing. We wrote our second sentence, and will finish up the last sentence tomorrow. When we come back to school next week, we will finish up this project with a cute art component. Our new popcorn words this week were: have, big, and small. We have been practicing these words all week, and today learned to read a new predecodable book called, A Farm. We really did a fantastic job reading this book in class today, so be sure to practice it at home with your child. Sign and return the book tomorrow for a special treat. We also finished up our tie-dyed turkey art projects! They look fantastic and are currently hanging on our wall to decorate our classroom for Thanksgiving. We have been doing a lot of turkey projects! In the afternoon we got to share our creative Tom Turkey family projects. We loved seeing all of the different ideas that could help Tom Turkey escape being Thanksgiving dinner! The farmer will have a tough time finding these birds to cook! Check them out below!
*I will not be here tomorrow afternoon, so there will be no blog post. Check back on Monday! Have a nice weekend. :) Today we started the writing of our turkey research project! We have taken the information from our graphic organizer and wrote our first sentence about turkeys. We will be writing two more sentences later this week to make up our reports. We also learned to be letter detectives today. We talked about what letter detectives have to do, and learned that they use their eyes to see the letter, use ears to hear the sounds, write letters, and sort letters. We practiced all of these skills and then worked in groups to sort pictures and write the letter F. We used a superhero letter detective rubric to check that we remembered all of our steps. We had a very special guest in our classroom today. We welcomed Ms. Williams, an Air Force medic, into our classroom to talk about Veteran's Day. She read us a book and answered our questions about what her job is. We ended our day with a fantastic Veteran's Day assembly where we honored our military members with songs and a great presentation by our second graders. We also got to see our friend Jazmyn get a character award certificate. Jazmyn was nominated for a character award for always having integrity and making good choices. Way to go Jazmyn!
This is letter F week! We made a fantastic word list for this letter. We filled our entire chart with words that have the /f/ sound! We are moving on from our turkey research from last week. All of our anchor charts are going to help us write about turkeys this week. Today we filled out a graphic organizer that will help us with our writing for the week. In math we practiced counting to fifty. On tonight's math homework please encourage your child to touch each number as they count. This will help them with number recognition and staying on track. In the afternoon we started the first part of our tie-dyed turkeys. We colored coffee filters with markers and then sprayed them with water and watched all of the colors run together. When these dry tomorrow, we will finish up and make them into a cute turkey project! Thank you for all of the food donations. We are so close to reaching our goal!
Today we learned to read a new predecodable book called A Trunk. You'll find this book in your child's home folder today, so please read it with them tonight for practice. This is an excellent way to build fluency and practice our popcorn words. Remember your child should be reading all of the popcorn words we've learned every night! Sign and return this book tomorrow for a special treat! In math we checked our progress on numbers 11-20 with a quiz page. We have started some research on turkeys for a writing project that we'll be starting next week. We have started to read books about turkeys and make notes on all of the turkey facts we've learned. We learned so much today, and that was just from one book! In the afternoon we made some tissue paper acorns to decorate our room for fall. Tomorrow we will be having our good news party! If your child received an invitation in their folder then they may bring a stuffed animal to school tomorrow. Remember that this party is a reward for SUPER behavior, and they must keep that up all the way through to tomorrow afternoon to attend! Today we worked on beginning sounds by playing a Promethean Board game. We had to give each squirrel the correct nut by matching beginning sounds to the right letter. We also have been working hard counting to fifty. We will be tested over counting to fifty at the end of this week, so be sure to practice at home! We also finished up some letter and sound assessments in the morning. In math we talked about the number 20, and learned that if we have two ten frames that are all filled up the numbers must be 20!. You'll find math homework in your child's folder to practice this number tonight. In the afternoon we finished working in our reading and math centers, and then started a fun fall painting project where we painted a fall tree with Q-Tips. Please remember our food drive is still going on until next Friday! If we reach our goal of 800 items, we will have a Gym Jam!
