All of our butterflies have made it to their chrysalis stage! Hopefully, we will be getting five new additions to our classroom next week. We talked about the giant word, metamorphosis, and that it means great change. That is exactly what is happening inside each chrysalis right now! We also talked about how our caterpillars were fuzzy and black and that their chrysalis is brown and shimmery. We are hoping to get to see them emerge next week! In the meantime, we will be getting our butterfly habitat ready for our new friends.

We have been busy with reading and spelling words in our -ug word family for the past two days. Yesterday we built words in our pocket chart, and today we played some Promethean games along with learning to read an -ug family emergent reader book. Please take some time and read this book with your child. Your child should be able to read all of the popcorn words and word family words, so have them read this book to you, and you can help them with the trickier words. Yesterday we completed a real/silly word sort and did some problem solving in math. Today in math we moved on to sorting things by size. Almost all of our butterflies have made a chrysalis, so while we wait for them to emerge, we are continuing on to the plant life cycle. Yesterday and today we talked about the different parts of a plant and why they are all important. We have also planted some bean seeds in plastic bags, and are hoping that they will sprout soon!
Well we have finally made it to letter Z week! This week we will be making our last word chart of this letter, so be sure to be brainstorming some good Z words at home. This week we are also working on the -ug word family. We worked on building words in our pocket chart, and then completed a word and picture match. In math we started chapter 9, which will cover different ways to classify objects. Today we talked about what makes items look alike and different. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, and then went up to the reading lab for our last round of AIMSweb testing! You will receive the results of this test in a week or so. Tomorrow is library day, so be sure to return your books! Don't forget to be working on the last family project, which will be our times lines! Those are due next Monday, May 4! We will display these all over the room.
Today we learned to read a new decodable book, A Ramp. Ask your child why dad had to use a ramp in the book for some comprehension practice. The two books we learned this week are in home folders today, so use that extra time to practice them at home. These books are great practice for the books that we will be learning in first grade. We also continued to talk about Earth Day and how we can help the earth. We did some writing today to tell what we would do to help the earth. We had great ideas about recycling, planting flowers, and picking up trash! Brennen Bear came to visit today and we worked on number position and recognition. You can help reinforce these skills by asking your child to tell you what number comes before or after a number that is given, For example, what comes before three, or what comes after eleven? In the afternoon we continued to work in our reading and math centers, and then made some great butterfly art to decorate our room for our new pets! Today our caterpillars arrived safe and sound. They are eating and growing quickly! We are excited about this hands on experience to witness the butterfly life cycle up close!
Happy Earth Day! Today we talked about how we can help keep our earth clean and beautiful. We made a list of things that we can do to help reduce, reuse and recycle. Some of us even took time out of recess to help pick up trash they found on the playground! We talked about how we can help the earth and how the earth can help us. In math we took our chapter 8 test over measurement. Everyone did a great job! On Friday we will begin a new chapter on sorting and classifying objects. In the afternoon we went to the computer lab to play some math games in Planet Turtle. Tomorrow is the last day to turn in field trip money, so be sure to send permission slips and the $7 admission to school tomorrow!
This week we are learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We are able to identify the four stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult. Yesterday we used rice and pasta to illustrate these four stages of butterfly development. It was a fun project, and really got us excited to meet our new butterfly friends, which should be arriving tomorrow! Here are a few of our pasta life cycle projects.
Check out our spring art project! We made cherry blossom pictures using watered down paint, straws and tissue paper. We used the straw to blow the paint around the paper, so it would look like tree branches. These works of art are displayed outside our classroom, and we've already received a lot of compliments!
Today we learned to read a new decodable book, A Bump. Ask your child what made a bump in the rug in this story. We only have three more decodable books to go for the year! We have come a long way and are a class full of great readers. We used our good reading skills to do a read and color direction activity. We used our knowledge of popcorn words, color words and picture clues to read simple sentences and follow the directions to color. In math we reviewed for our test over measurement tomorrow. We started new centers this week, where we are working with number sentences, CVC words, and nonsense words. We even learned to play a new game called Bump It, which helps us with our addition. This week we are continuing our study of the butterfly life cycle, and this afternoon we used different pasta shapes to illustrate each of the four stages.
Welcome back for another week! This is letter Y week, and we only have one more week to go before we're finished with our letter of the week study! Today we started our assessments on our 50 sight words and 10 color words. We are practicing these words every morning at school, but home practice is important too. We worked on rhyming words again today, and played a game on the Promethean board to practice rhyming skills, before checking what we knew on a matching activity. In math we are finishing up our unit on measurement with capacity. We talked about how different kinds of containers can hold different amounts, and used unifix cubes to conduct some investigations on different containers. This week we are going to be focusing on the butterfly life cycle. We learned today about the different butterfly stages of life, and will be doing a lot more work this week on butterflies!
Field trip permission forms and money are due THURSDAY April 23! Today we learned to read our trickiest decodable book yet! The Quiz used a lot of words that we needed our blending skills to read. Ask your child what question Kim was asked in The Quiz. Look for both books we have learned this week to come home tomorrow for home practice. We took a spelling quiz today over simple CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words like log, pig, web, and bat. We used our roller coaster moves to sound out the beginning middle and end sounds. We have come so far since the beginning of the year! We are using sounds to spell words every day! We had a language lesson today from Mrs. DeFranco. She taught us about things that come in pairs, like mittens, socks, and earrings. We completed a following directions activity where we had to dress a bear and give her different pairs of items. In the afternoon we worked in our last reading and math centers for the week, and then made an x-ray man craft for the letter X. Keep sending in those field trip forms. Remember they are due next Thursday!
