In folders tonight you'll find February's family art project. This time I am asking that you create a fun valentine holder for our Valentine's Day party on February 12th. The only rule for this project is that it MUST be able to stand up on its own on your child's desk. We will use these projects to "mail" each other valentines and treats. There is also a note about the upcoming Cosmic BINGO and auction for the PTC. Kindergarten is making an art basket for the silent auction to help raise money for our school's PTC, and we are asking for any art supply donations to help fill our basket. Please come out to this event on Saturday, March 19th! I hope to see you there!
We've made it through the week! We were very excited to add the 99th gumball to our gumball machine today, and are looking forward to the 100th day of school on Monday! We will have a celebration on Monday with fun activities through the day. We'll also share our 100th day projects, so be sure to send them in on Monday. Today we talked more about naming words (nouns) and did a great job at sorting pictures of people, places, and things. We did some following directions and listening activities that utilized all of the language skills we've been working on so far this year like, ordinal numbers, above and below, and next to and between.

We did so much work today! We really worked our brains hard. We did more word building with the -ig family and did some fluency reading practice and handwriting with this word family. We also had fun learning the "Big Pig Song" that you can check out here for fun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOu-QkmInKc). We also counted to 100 to start practicing for our 100th day of school on Monday. This morning we also talked about nouns. We learned that a noun can be any person, place, or thing. We had fun with a pocket chart activity where we had to sort picture cards into the person, place, or thing category. We only have one more predecodable book to go before we start our decodable books, which will not have any picture helpers to help us read. We are excited to start using all of the skills we've learned to start decoding words and stories on our own! For math we worked on adding objects up to 10. I've been very impressed with how quickly we got the hang of adding numbers and reading number sentences. Way to go! In the afternoon we finished up the last of our reading and math centers and then talked about how to label a diagram. We practiced labeling parts using a snowman. We used letter sound clues to figure out which labels named the right part of our snowman.
Don't forget that Monday is the 100th DAY OF SCHOOL! Please have your 100th day projects ready to share on Monday. We are half way through our week! We have really been working with our -ig word family. We played some games on the Promethean board where we were building words that matched pictures and then practiced reading sentences with these word family words. See if your child can come up with a list of -ig words at home. They can even be silly words like cig, vig, or lig. The goal is for us to recognize the written and rhyming patterns that make words part of the same family. We added a picture sorting page to our interactive ABC notebook for the letter N. In math we learned a super fun new game called Reach for the Stars! This is a great game to practice adding numbers together. Partners take turns rolling two dice and adding them together. After the dice are added together, we color in a box above the number that we rolled. The first one to make it to the row of stars is the winner! We had a lot of fun with this, and it was great addition reinforcement. In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers, then read Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Bruehner. Please look for tonight's homework and snack note in your child's folder this evening.
Today we did some word building with the -ig word family. We are finding that roller coaster riding the word is really helping us figure out the beginning, middle, and ending sounds. We made a pigpen word family craft for you to practice reading these words at home. Please practice these words with your child tonight. It helps to build fluency and confidence! We also put our new popcorn words to good use with a new predecodable book called, What Do We See? Please take time and practice reading this book at home, then sign and return it to school this week. In math we did some problem solving with addition using objects. We are starting to get the hang of writing number sentences using the + and = signs. In the afternoon we worked in reading and math centers, then read the story Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner.
Don't forget that Monday we will celebrate the 100th day of school! This is letter N week in our class. We made such a great word list today, and then did some drawing and writing practice for some of these words. We still have some room left on our chart, so try to think of more words that start with N for tomorrow! We also introduced the -ig family this week. We "tapped" out beginning, middle, and ending sounds and also started to learn a funny song about a big pig that will help us with this word family. We introduced four new popcorn words today: at, like, was, and want. We only have about 6 more words to go and we will have introduced ALL of the kindergarten sight words! In math we introduced the = sign, and used it to write complete addition sentences. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, then made a cut and glue snowman. Remember tomorrow is library day, so be sure to return your books!
Super Hero's of Character Reading Night February 5, 2016 6pm – 8pm Whiteside Elementary Multi-Purpose Room Please join us for some Super Hero Reading Fun!! Crafts/ Reading/ Games (school cancellation make up date; February 19) Happy Friday! Today we wrapped up our study of the -ed word family. It is so amazing to see how far we've come this year with word families, and we are only half way through! We are getting so great at blending sounds together, and it is helping up to become superstar readers! We completed a language lesson today about the concepts of first, second, and third. This was great review from our earlier math chapters, and it also served as a great listening and following directions activity. We had to actively listen to a story and answer questions, then listen to multi-step directions and follow them on our papers. In the afternoon we worked in our reading and math centers, then talked about the upcoming 100th day of school! We are very excited about this day, and we will celebrate it on Monday, February 1! In your child's folder I have put a note about the 100th day projects that have been assigned. Have fun with these projects. I can't wait to see them on the 100th day of school!
I hope everyone enjoyed the snow yesterday! We shared what we did on our snow day, and it sounds like everyone had a great time in the snow. Today we read The Mitten by Jan Brett. We talked about characters in a story and then put the characters in order as they appeared in the book. We also added a new page for the letter M to our interactive notebooks. In math we have started to make number sentences for addition problems, and were introduced to the plus sign today. We also started a new round of centers today where we are practicing ten frames, addition, rhyming, beginning sounds, and word families.
If you sent in a dollar for hat/cape day, it was sent back home in your child's folder. We will be having hat/cape day TOMORROW (Friday22)! Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. We are back at school for letter M week, so start thinking of some letter M words we can put on our word list tomorrow. We introduced 5 new popcorn words today! We are really getting close to finishing our introduction of these words, and only have about ten more words to go. Today we focused on the words run, said, that, they, and to. We also read a new predecodable book, which you can practice reading at home tonight. We also talked about how to be a good friend today in honor of our friend Martin Luther King Jr. We had a great discussion about how to be a friend to someone, how to include everyone, and how to stay peaceful. In math we did a check my progress page over addition stories and adding groups together. Tomorrow is PE day, so be sure to wear your tennis shoes and not boots!
Happy Friday! Today we brought our study of the -et word family to a close. Everyone did such a great job at blending beginning, middle and ending sounds together! We were all able to read our word family words. Great progress has been made since the beginning of the year! I am very proud! We also did a language lesson on the meaning of widest and narrowest, and used this vocabulary to complete a following directions and listening activity. In the afternoon we made a fun lady bug art project to end our letter of the week study. Don't forget that we will have no school on Monday in honor or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Enjoy the long weekend and check out our snowman art from yesterday!
Yesterday our class made a great group graphic organizer about snowmen! Today, we took that information and made our own graphic organizers and turned them into a three sentence paragraph! We wrote about what snowman can do, what snowman are, and what snowman have. We really did a nice job with our three sentences, and remembered our good sentence rules for writing. We also learned to add a complete illustration that matched our writing. A complete illustration includes the ground our character is standing on and the background to the picture. Everyone did a great job! In math we started using objects to tell addition stories and add numbers, and in the afternoon we made torn paper perspective snowmen, which we will use to decorate our classroom. Make sure you remember to turn in your library books tomorrow!
