Welcome back! It's hard to believe we are already in our third week of school! The time is really going by quickly. Today we talked about the letter F. We figured out that fish, friend, fire, and fan all make the /f/ sound. This week we will cover letters F-J, so get a head start at home on those sounds so we can come up with some words for each letter. Every morning during our carpet meeting we sing songs to help us learn. One of our favorites is the months of the year song, and we are excited about starting a new month tomorrow! We used the song to help us figure out which month comes after August. We also sing a color song every week. So far we have learned songs for red and blue. Today we started to sing about the color orange. In math we talked about the number zero, and used small objects to make groups and count. In the afternoon we made a paper plate frog art project for our letter of the day.

Happy Friday! Today was letter E day. We have found out the writing the lowercase e can be a little tricky, but we did our very best to practice today. We found that elephant, egg, and eyes start with the letter E. We worked more with classifying objects today. We had to sort pictures of toys, food, and animals. This skill comes in very handy in keeping our classroom neat and tidy. Being good at sorting objects means that we can put things away in the right place with like objects! We took a break from our math series toady to stop and practice writing numbers 1-5, and counting objects. Please keep practicing name and number writing at home. Today was an exciting day in the library. We got to check out our very first library book! These books went home in book bags today, so be sure to spend some time this weekend reading them. They are due back by the next library day. We are not allowed to check out new books, if old books are not returned. In the afternoon we made some fun elephant puppets for our letter of the day. Next week we will be introducing letters F-J, and also learning about math the concepts of equal to, greater and less than! Have a great weekend!
Today was letter D day in kindergarten. We have been keeping up with practicing the sound that our letter of the day makes, as well as practicing writing each letter. Making sure our capital letters are tall and lowercase letters are small is a bit tricky, but we have the whole year to get it down! We even get to practice writing these letters on the big Promethean board to make it extra fun! We also took a day to do more name writing practice, and all of us are improving with that skill. In math today we reviewed how to count and show four and five, and today's lesson focused on writing these numbers. We learned two more number poems to help us write the numbers four and five. See if your child can remember them and tell them to you as they practice their homework tonight. The poem for number five is a little silly, so it's our favorite! I've put the poems for each number below so you can use them at home for practice. In the afternoon we had a surprise fire drill, and everyone did such a great job remembering our safe spot outside! I was very impressed. In the afternoon we made some torn paper donuts for the letter D, and got some special donuts to eat as a sweet treat! Today was letter C day in kindergarten. We practiced writing capital and lowercase Cs, as well as learning the sound that this letter makes. We figured out that car, car, comb, and classroom all start with the letter of the day! We have been working hard to identify beginning sounds of all words, not just the letter of the day. We practice this important skill every morning. You can help your child at home with that by asking them the sound the hear at the beginning of words from around the house. For example table starts with the /t/ sound, and door has the /d/ sound at the beginning. In math today we learned to count objects in groups of four and five, and show that many by coloring boxes and showing our fingers. In the afternoon we talked about sorting objects by type. We practiced on our Promethean board by sorting buses and apples, and putting them into like groups. Then we tried an activity that was a bit harder, where we had to sort objects into animal or food categories. Please check your child's folder for information about our upcoming Grandparent's lunch! You'll find information about this special day to eat lunch with your child at school.
Today we talked about the letter B! It was a little tricky coming up with some words that start with this letter, but eventually we got the hang of it! We have been learning to sing about the color blue, and are really starting to get the hang of our days of the week song! This song is so helpful for figuring out what day of the week it is! We are working hard to learn to hold our pencils the right way, and how to write our names and letters. Practicing names and letters at home is great for helping us learn! In math we learned to write the numbers 1, 2, and 3. We learned some helpful number poems to remind us how to write each number. It is also our first day of homework! Please find a letter explaining homework in your child's home folder. The homework that was sent home today is a reinforcement of the lesson we did in class. Please remember to have your child write his/her name on their papers. In the afternoon we practiced for our first fire drill, and did an excellent job! Tomorrow we will be having a drill for severe weather so we know how to stay safe in school. Tomorrow will be letter C day, so see if you can come up with some words to share that start with the letter C!
Welcome back to another week! For the next several weeks we will be focusing on one letter of the alphabet per day. This will give us some basic knowledge about the letters before spending a full week on each of them. Today we started with letter A. We talked about what the letter A looks like, what sound it makes, and how to write it in capital and lowercase form! We also thought of different words that start with the A sound, and then completed an apple tree cut and glue activity where we glued the pictures of words that start with A onto the tree. We also started lesson 1 in our math series, which focused on counting 1, 2, and 3 objects. A set of math flashcards went home today for home practice. These do not have to be returned to school, but can be used at home for reinforcement. Starting tomorrow we will have math homework that comes home a few times a week. More information about homework will be sent home tomorrow! In the afternoon we talked about sequencing, and put some apple core pictures in order from first to last. Don't forget that tomorrow is PE day, so make sure to wear tennis shoes! We will be talking about the letter B tomorrow, so see if you can come up with some words to share that start with the letter B!
We have made it through our first week of kindergarten! We have almost mastered the color red song (ask your child if they can sing it for you), and are working hard to learn the days of the week and months of the year! Today we practiced writing our names. I told students that it is important to be able to write your name neatly and quickly, so we will be practicing this skill a lot! When we are finished we will be able to write our names with our eyes closed and maybe even upside down! We also worked on following multiple step directions. We had a cut and glue matching page where we had to write our names, cut, glue, and color. We did a great job keeping up with Ms. Fernandez. Today for our specials class we went to the library. We learned about checking out books, and soon we'll be able to bring home own very own library book. In the afternoon we did more cutting practice where we had to cut a zig zag spider web! We also learned to use dice to roll numbers and count the dots. We used the dice to play a number finding game. Have a good weekend!
Today we had to complete our morning classroom routine all by ourselves! When we come into the room we have to hang up our book bag, turn in our home folder, make a lunch choice, and start our morning work. That is a lot to remember, but we did such a good job! We practiced saying our alphabet a different way today. It was a little tricky because it's different than the ABC song, but with practice we will get it down perfectly! We did our first kindergarten assessment today, where we had to try to write our name, letters, and numbers. That can be tough to do, but that's OK because we are in kindergarten to learn! I will share these assessments at parent conferences in October to show how much learning and progress has taken place. For math we talked about some shape simple shapes. We also completed our first math paper where we had to identify shapes and color them the right color. In the afternoon we went to the reading lab to do some AIMSweb testing. This is a small assessment over letter and number identification as well as counting. Results from this assessment will be sent home when they are available, and they will also be discussed in our October conferences. After all of that testing we read If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff and did some comprehension exercises on our Promethean Board to test our memory of the story. We have almost finished our first week of kindergarten!
We are half done with our first week! Today was a very busy day for kindergarten. In the morning we traveled through the school and went through the rules of being a Whiteside Warrior. We went all around the school and met different people, like Mr. Johnson our assistant principal, Mrs. Peters, and Ms. Barclay. All of these people helped us learn the right way to behave at Whiteside School. We rotated through stations at the bathroom, lunch room, bus lines, hallway, and office. At each location we practiced the right way to behave and learned what is expected of us. Today we read the book Froggy Goes to School. Ask your child what kind of a bad dream Froggy had in the story. These simple comprehension questions are a great way to get your child thinking about reading! In the afternoon we made a class book. Our first book will be titled Who's in Ms. Fernandez's Class? We each got to author a page of the story by writing our names and drawing a picture of ourselves. This will be a great keepsake for our class this year.
We made it through another day of kindergarten! I was very impressed with how much everyone remembered the routines we practiced yesterday! A big thank you for EVERYONE returning their plastic home folders! It is so important to check this folder every day for important papers and information. We are off to a great start! Today we did our first piece of "real" kindergarten work. We talked about how to write our names, and then we practiced it on our own. Everyone did a nice job making sure their name was sitting on the line. Please have your child practice writing his/her name at home. This is an important skill to master and be able to do quickly, as we will be writing our names on all of our classwork. I will keep these name papers in their kindergarten folder to show growth at conferences, so these did not go home today. We met our PE teacher Ms. Hollaway today! We learned a lot of rules and expectations for PE class, as well as how important it is to wear tennis shoes on PE days, so we can play safely. In the afternoon we practiced cutting with scissors, and we all did a great job! We talked about some important safety rules when it comes to scissors like how to hold them when we walk and only cut our papers. We also talked about the 4 B's of Whiteside: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Caring, and Be Safe. These are school wide expectations all students learn. To reinforce those important expectations, we made a cute bee art project today, which went home in your child's folder. Check them out below!
