Happy Friday! We have had a crazy day today! We started our day with a surprise assembly to kick off our 1 School 1 Book program. The whole school will be reading Zapato Power: Freddy Ramos Takes Off! by Jacqueline Jules. In conjunction with this school-wide activity our service project will be to donate new or gently used shoes to help children in other countries have clean water to drink. What a great excuse to clean out those closets! In the afternoon we took our sight word tests, and then made some folded butterfly art to hand from our classroom ceiling. We have one chrysalis, and I think by Monday all 5 of our caterpillars will be in their chrysalis too. Our butterfly art will help them feel right at home when they emerge next week!

Hello families! For the past two days we have been doing all kinds of sight word and blending activities. Learning to identify beginning blends of words have really helped us with reading words in books that we don't know, and today we added vowel sounds to the blends to really give us good clues as to what new words are. All of the hard work we've been putting into our sight words has paid off so much! We are finding our leveled readers so much easier to read now that we have almost all of our sight words down. Our first grade teachers will be impressed! The last list of 4-5 letter words will be tested over tomorrow, so be sure to practice reading those words tonight. Over the next two weeks I will be giving one final assessment over all 60 popcorn and color words! In math we discussed cylinders and cones, and today focused back on all of the 3-D shapes and how they can move. We talked about how these shapes can roll, stack, and slide depending on their shape. We had fun experimenting with the 3-D blocks to illustrate these movements. In the afternoon we made a really neat butterfly life cycle using rice and different shaped pasta to represent the four stages of the life cycle that we've been learning about. One of our caterpillars has climbed up to the top of the cup and has made his/her "J", which means the process of making a chrysalis is beginning! It's very exciting!
Today we continued our work with beginning blends, and we are really working on being able to pick out the first two sounds we hear in these words. Sometimes when these sounds get blended together they can be tricky, but we are really starting to get the hang of it! We played some sight word matching games today for some fun to help us prepare for our test on Friday. In math we focused on spheres and cubes, and found several objects around the room that fit those two shapes. In the afternoon we worked in our new reading and math centers and then had an awesome assembly! We had a visit from April Vollm from Read, Set, JUMP! She taught us about being healthy and staying in shape and did some really cool activities like riding a mini bike, juggling, jump roping, and an awesome aerial act! We really enjoyed her show and it was a great way to end the day.
Hello families! I hope everyone enjoyed the nice weekend weather! I can't believe that we are on letter Y week! We only have 20 more school days until the end of the year, and the days are really starting to fly by! We are continuing our word on beginning word blends and reviewed what we talked about last week with a blend sorting activity. We have added the beginning Y page to our interactive notebook, and are excited that we have almost filled it up with letter work! In math we are skipping ahead to chapter 12 on solid (3D) shapes. We learned a fun poem about solid shapes and will be focusing on cones, spheres, prisms, cubes, and cylinders. In the afternoon we worked in new reading and math centers which have use practicing, addition, popcorn words, letter sounds, and numeracy activities. This week we will be learning all about butterflies! We have a cup of caterpillars (we've named them ALL Jerry. Ha!) that we are watching grow and soon transform into beautiful Painted Lady butterflies! Today we focused on the life cycle of the butterfly and watched a very cool video about how a caterpillar sheds its skin. It was very neat! We are excited to watch our caterpillars continue to grow, and hope they will be making their chrysalis by the end of the week. We've moved on to our last word list of four and five letter words, so be sure to practice for Friday's test!
Happy Earth Day! Today we talked a lot about the Earth in honor of Earth Day. We learned about ways that we can help keep our Earth clean and healthy like, recycling, picking up trash, planting trees or gardens, and saving energy. We know that it is important to turn the lights off when we leave a room and to not leave the water running while we're brushing our teeth! Little changes add up to make a big difference. Today was also our sight word test over all of our three letter words. We did a great job, and all of our hard work is paying off big time! In the afternoon we made a book about ways to save the Earth and talked about what we will try to do to keep it healthy. Enjoy the weekend!
Today we did more work on identifying beginning blends of words. We also finished up our measurement unit in math! We had a lot of fun using balance scales and other objects to measure weight, length, and height during this chapter, and next we will be moving on to 3-D shapes! for a fun wrap-up to our measurement and data unit, we did a fun Fruit Loop graphing activity. We sorted our cereal pieces into groups, then counted and recorded our data on a bar graph. We had fun seeing which colors we had the most and least of. Don't forget that tomorrow will be our three letter popcorn word test! We are really getting good at reading these words! Keep studying to get ready for first grade!
Yesterday we read a new comprehension book called My Bed. We are getting so good at reading independently, and all of the popcorn words we've been learning this year are really helping us too! We are finding popcorn words almost everywhere! We discussed capacity yesterday during our measurement lesson and learned that capacity means how much something can hold. We looked at different containers and used objects to fill them to see which could hold more or less. Today in math we did a review over all of what we've learned about measurement, and will take our test tomorrow. We made some really cool spring cherry blossom art projects over the past couple of days using watery paint and tissue paper. We used straws to blow the paint on our papers to look like tree branches. Be on the look out for some pictures when our masterpieces are dry! They will look great in the hallway!
I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend! We are on letter X week! It's a little tricky to make a word list of words that begin with x, so we talked about different words that have this letter in it. We learned a new poem this week about Spring, and we did a great job reading it and putting it together ourselves. Please practice reading this poem at home tonight. In math we compared different objects in length, height, and width. We also talked about several classroom objects and compared them to each other. In the afternoon we had a lot of fun looking at pictures of x-rays! We looked at human and animal x-ray pictures and had fun guessing what body part or animal each picture was. For our daily art project we made an "X'Ray Man" out of the letter X.
Please don't forget that field trip money and permission slips are due on WEDNESDAY!!! If you would like to chaperone our field trip, parent money ($8) and background checks are also due this day! Happy Friday! Today we went on a word hunt and searched the room for some CVC words! There were picture cards all around the room today and we had to figure out how to spell each word and record it on our papers. It was a lot of fun, and we did a great job at identifying the beginning, middle, and end sounds of each word. We had a Brennen Bear lesson today about the word several. We learned that several means many, and we used this new vocabulary to describe groups of objects and answer questions about a story. In the afternoon we took a break and had a little fun learning to play Tic-Tac-Toe! We had so much fun challenging our friends to games, and learning to think ahead to our next moves. Field trip forms are due next Wednesday, April 20. If you requested to be a chaperone, please remember to have your background checks turned into the office, along with $8 (adult price) as soon as possible. Have a nice weekend!
Today we had a discussion about the story that we read on Monday about the Woodcutter and his three wishes. We thought about what kinds of things that we would wish for, and then we wrote a sentence about it. We are really working on using the sounds we hear to sound spell words. It can be tricky, but we did a great job at trying our best. We added a letter W page to our interactive notebooks and completed a picture sound sorting activity. In math we got to experiment with the balance scale to learn about measuring weight! We will be using this fun too again to see how objects compare in weight. In the afternoon we played a spring dice drawing game and used our Chromebooks for some fun reading and math enrichment. Don't forget that tomorrow we will have a test over all of the two letter popcorn words! Field trip forms are also due Wednesday, April 20!
